Last Tuesday I had a day off work to attend a course at the Barnsbury Centre in Islington. The course was entitled "Maths through Role Play". It supported teachers in the planning for the role play area, taking into account pratical maths activites.
The home corner or role paly area can become very "samey" and I know that sometimes it is just easy to let the children play with what is there. However I was inspired and took my entusiasm back to the classroom.
I spoke to my classroom assistants and the children and we decided that we would plan for the area together. After an interesting discussion we all decided that after half term we would change the role play area into a pirate ship. Their knowledge on the parts of the ship was astounding and I can't wait to get started after half term. Now I am pondering on how to make a working ship's wheel! Any ideas? Watch this space!
